Farms

The impact of Brexit will be a major disrupter in our food and agribusiness sector over the coming years. Together with food supply becoming more of a mainstream focus, eventual removal of the BPS system, introduction of new environmental management schemes, and the Agriculture Act 2020, this looks sure to keep us all busy.

The trend of clients carrying out regular, systematic reviews of their business model to ensure that they are operating as efficiently as possible and to maximise profitability will surely continue.

On 30 November 2020 the government published their roadmap to “a better, fairer farming system”. This looks to be a change in gear from the government, encouraging  wider innovation and opportunities.

Some key themes from this are:

  • Sustainable farming – to reduce the impact farming has on the environment, and how this will be communicated to the public
  • Innovation in farming practices – Agritech is looking to be a key player in this
  • Natural capital – using stock of natural resources in a way which will enhance the environment
  • Portfolio diversification – looking at your asset as a whole and identifying opportunities to broaden or rebalance
