Local government

Local authorities provide vital services for people and businesses in their areas. Our multi-disciplinary team provides specialist advice to local authorities to help them manage their unique complexities and challenges.

Using our bespoke blend of experts in landlord & tenant, real estate disputes, vires, governance, corporate, state aid, procurement, finance and asset management, we can help local authorities to manage key projects and provide legal assistance in areas that may be outside of their own expertise or where they require additional support. For example, we can help manage and/or restructure commercial investments to minimise the impact of a financial downturn, ultimately helping local authorities to deliver the best returns on their portfolios.

Our experience

  • Ipswich Borough Council on the powers to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary trading company to exercise the power to trade and, in particular, to undertake appropriate property investments. Advising on loan financing and procurement aspects related to transaction.
  • Navigating through legal issues when providing additional funding and support to subsidiary company, including releasing overage arrangements in favour of a local authority.

  • St Edmundsbury Borough Council on the £80 million redevelopment of the former Bury St Edmunds cattle market.

  • Chelmsford City Council on property investment and development transactions on plans for the investment by the Council in improvements to the Station Square in Chelmsford.

  • Supporting a London Borough through the entire re-procurement of its IT function in inter-dependent procurement processes, including core IT, HR/payroll and disaster recovery and data centre services.

  • Advising authorities on procurement and state aid compliance in construction, infrastructure and regeneration projects undertaken by clients right across the public sector, including in central and local government, regulators, executive agencies of government, NDPBs, universities and NHS organisations.
