Employment Rights Bill clears latest hurdle in House of Commons

With the completion of its House of Commons committee stage on 16 January, the Employment Rights Bill 2024 is one step closer to becoming law. You can find out more information about its key measures in this briefing. The revised text of the Bill is now available here.

Over 20 days of sittings more than 200 amendments were considered at the committee stage. The majority were Government amendments, which were all accepted. The overall shape of the Bill has not changed significantly as a result, though there has been a lot of tidying up and refining.

The most noteworthy amendments would extend the time limit for issuing most types of employment tribunal proceedings from three to six months. Apart from that, there have been limited changes of substance and the implementation timetable remains the same.

The Bill will now complete two final stages in the House of Commons before moving to the Lords. We don’t yet have a timetable for these remaining stages.
